AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Education officials in the Wylie Independent School District in Texas have confirmed that members of the Islamic organization “Why Islam” distributed religious materials at the public Wylie East High School without obtaining official authorization.
According to a district official speaking to the media, four women affiliated with the organization were present on the school campus and distributed brochures titled “Understanding Sharia,” copies of the Qur’an, headscarves, and hijabs to students. Footage shared on the social media platform X also shows that candy was handed out to students.
The official stated that a review of security camera footage indicated that fewer than 50 students approached the group’s table. Most reportedly took only candy, around four students had henna applied to their hands, and approximately 12 students tried on headscarves or hijabs.
In an official statement sent to students’ families, district authorities emphasized that no external organization is permitted to distribute materials or engage in discussions with students without prior approval from school and district administrators. Officials said the organization neither had permission to distribute materials nor completed the required procedures for guest participation in student activities.
On its website, the organization “Why Islam” states that its primary mission is to provide accurate information about Islam and to counter stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding the religion.
